In most cases, the most important thing you can do at the design stage is to consider which program code will help to automate testing process or make it more effective. This code can be incorporated directly into the product, or be written separately, as individual utilities. It is not necessary that you will get all of what you ask for. It is amazing how many new tests can be created and how many hard-to-reproduce bugs can be caught due to the mere knowledge of the amount of available memory before starting a certain process, during it and after its completion. Testers simply refuse to believe it until they themselves learn this fact by experience.
